About Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University or RMU for short, is a private, coeducational university in Pittsburgh, which is the county seat of Allegheny County and second largest city in the US state of Pennsylvania, having a population estimated at a number of over 312 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, fact which also makes it the largest city located in Appalachia and the largest city along the Ohio River. Although, Pittsburgh is historically known for its steel industry, today, its economy is largely based on healthcare, education, technology, robotics, and financial services.

 

RMU was founded in 1921 and was named after Robert Morris, who signed the Declaration of Independence, and helped finance the ensuing war with the British. It offers its students, today, 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate degree programs, through several academic division among which there are: the School of Business, the School of Education and Social Sciences and the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, also offering Ph.D. in Instructional Management and Leadership, Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Business Administration.

 

Athletics

The university athletic teams are known as the Robert Morris Colonials, who compete in NCAA Division I (FCS, formerly Division I-AA, in football), most of the teams participating in the Northeast Conference. The Colonials also compete in Atlantic Hockey, for men's ice hockey and College Hockey America, for women's ice hockey. Among the sports, in which the teams have experinced notable achievements, there is basketball, in which they won their only NCAA Tournament game, in 1983, and qualified for their only NIT tournament, in 2008. Robert Morris is also known for its bowling team, which has produced several well known professional bowlers, over the years.

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Joseph Hogan - CEO of ABB Group, Hank Fraley - offensive lineman for the St. Louis Rams, Tim Hall - former NFL running back with the Oakland Raiders, Kevin Colbert - General Manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Brianne McLaughlin - 2010 Winter Olympics women's ice hockey team, Robin R. Sanders - United States Ambassador to Nigeria, and Ryan Cruthers - professional ice hockey player.
